Recommended Reading — suttas & sutta anthologies
- In the Buddha’s Words, Bhikkhu Bodhi, Wisdom Publications, 2005.
- This is a great book for starting to read the suttas. Quite long, but suttas are grouped and introduced by topic.
- The Buddha’s Teachings on Social and Communal Harmony, Bhikkhu Bodhi, Wisdom Publications, 2016. Another excellent compilation, more focused on social and communal topics such as friendship, disputes, and more.
- Aṇguttara Nikāya (The Numerical Discourses of the Buddha), trans by Bhikkhu Bodhi, Wisdom Publications, 2012.
- Digha Nikāya (Long Discourses), translated by Maurice Walshe, Wisdom Publications, 1995.
- Majjhima Nikāya (Middle-Length Discourses), trans by Bhikkhu Ñāṇamoli and Bhikkhu Bodhi, Wisdom Publications, 1995.
- Saṃyutta Nikāya (Connected Discourses), translated by Bhikkhu Bodhi, Wisdom Publications, 2003.
- Sutta Nipāta, trans by Bhikkhu Bodhi, Wisdom 2017. Especially suttas 1.8 (, 2.4, 2.10, and books 4 and 5 (Aṭṭhakavagga and Pārāyanavagga).
- The Group of Discourses, trans by K. R. Norman, Pali Text Society, 2015. This is another translation of the Sutta Nipāta, and, like Bhikkhu Bodhi’s, is very true to the Pāli.
- Khuddhaka Nikāya, especially the Therīgatha (verses of the elder nuns) and the Therāgatha (verses of the elder monks)
