Rouse Yourself, Sit Down!
Sutta Nipāta 2.10
Rouse yourself, sit down!
What benefit is there for you in sleep?
What sleep is there for those hurting,
afflicted, pierced by an arrow?
Rouse yourself, sit down!
train hard for peace;
don’t let the king of death, seeing you heedless,
take you under his control.
The desiring by which
devas and humans remain, tied (to existence) —
cross over this very entanglement / attachment.
Do not let this opportunity pass you by.
For those for whom the opportunity has passed
lament, ending up in no good fortune.
Heedlessness is dust, dust is heedlessness,
dust follows on from heedlessness;
With heedfulness, through wisdom,
you can pull out the dart from yourself.
